A man suspected of stealing more than $1,000,000 worth of jewelry from a Cobb County store in 2010 has been arrested in Florida. And it’s all because of a Wendy’s restaurant spoon he tossed away, police said.
The U.S. Marshals Service and Cobb Sheriff's Office located Osniel Labrada-Guillen on Friday in Miami-Dade County, according to the sheriff's office. He waived extradition and faces other charges in Florida, but will later be returned to Cobb County, where DNA testing has linked him to the 2010 heist.
Labrada-Guillen, 29, is accused of burglarizing Diamonds R Forever on Wade Green Road on Jan. 14, 2010, according to police. He allegedly cut the store’s phone cords and then cut a hole in the roof to enter the store, his arrest warrant states.
The day after the jewelry store burglary, items taken from the store were found in a bin on Cherokee Street in Kennesaw, along with a paper bag from a Wendy’s fast food restaurant, the arrest warrant states. A plastic spoon from the Wendy’s bag was sent to the GBI Crime Lab for DNA testing.
Then on April 23, 2012, a similar burglary occurred at a jewelry store in Indiana, where the suspect also cut a hole in the roof to gain entry. A ski mask found at that store was also submitted for DNA testing, according to police.
According to the arrest warrant, that DNA test showed a match between the Indiana and Kennesaw burglaries, “but the suspect was unknown.”
Labrada-Guillen was arrested in March after a traffic stop in Miami, and DNA samples taken during that arrest were later found to match the DNA from the Kennesaw and Indiana jewelry thefts. He was allowed to post bond and was released in March.
Labrada-Guillen was being held without bond Monday night at the Miami-Dade County jail, records showed.
