A northeast Georgia man confined to a wheelchair was killed in a fire at his home.

William Martin, 58, of Royston, was found dead Friday near the front door of his double-wide mobile home off Wildcat Bridge Road, according to the Athens Banner-Herald.

Madison County sheriff’s Deputy Austin Shubert saw thick smoke while he was on patrol in the area, which is adjacent to the Broad River, the newspaper reported. He found the house completely engulfed in flames around 4 p.m.

Shubert could not enter the home and see if anyone was inside, according to the Banner-Herald. After firefighters brought the blaze under control, they discovered Martin’s body.

The sheriff’s office is waiting for the State Crime Lab to determine the cause of death. The Fire Marshal is investigating the origin of the fire.
