Those who believe in alternative and holistic medicine have long considered Dr. Jan McBarron, a Columbus weight-loss specialist, a hero as she has railed against the dangers of prescription drugs in books and on a nationally syndicated radio program.

But the philosophy that has given the 66-year-old physician a national profile hasn’t always guided her practice.

There, in her modest suite of offices on Columbus’ Macon Road, she has developed a source of income by prescribing and dispensing a potentially dangerous diet drug, an AJC investigation found.

And, the AJC found, at least some of the people who have received that drug, the stimulant phentermine, never set foot in the door.
