Rep. Jay Powell, R-Camilla, has been named the new chairman of the state House Ways and Means Committee, according to a copy of committee assignments obtained by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Powell, an attorney, was first elected in 2008. He takes over the House’s primary tax-writing committee from the retired Rep. Mickey Channell, R-Greensboro.

Other changes to committee chairs include Rep. Stephen Allison, R-Blairsville, becoming the new leader of the Special Rules Committee, taking over for Rep. Willie Talton, R-Warner Robins, who lost a primary election last year, and Rep. Gerald Greene, R-Cuthbert, being named to the newly created position of vice chair of Appropriations, the budget-writing committee.

Meanwhile, Rep. Amy Carter, R-Valdosta, and Rep. Ed Rynders, R-Albany, have swapped positions with Carter now becoming chair of the General Government subcommittee of Appropriations and Rynders becoming chairman of the Government Affairs Committee.
