The expansion would allow the Park Service to access burial mounds currently land locked by private property. The Great Temple Mound is the largest Mississippian mound on the Macon Plateau. This sleek Art Moderne style building serves as the visitors' center at the Ocmulgee National Monument.

Jim David, superintendent at the Ocmulgee National Monument, sits in front of an earth lodge in this 2002 photo. This structure burned and collapsed about one thousand years ago and was reconstructed in the 1930's. It is forty-two feet in diameter and is the largest of eight earth lodges discovered on the Macon Plateau. People of this plateau probably used the earth lodge for ceremonies and meetings. There is a controversy over a proposed freeway running through the area.
