Smyrna’s deputy police chief died Monday after suffering a heart attack while on duty, a department spokesman said.

Smyrna police spokesman Officer C.D. Graeff said Deputy Chief Michael Brown, 62, was having lunch with other members of the department’s command staff Monday afternoon when he became ill. He died a short time later at WellStar Kennestone Hospital.

Brown, who had been with the department for 38 years, was named deputy chief in 1999.

Prior to becoming a Smyrna patrolman in 1976, Brown served in the U.S. Navy from 1972 to 1974 and was later a Navy Reservist.

Brown is survived by his wife, Monika.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Carmichael Funeral Home in Smyrna, and Brown's funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Smyrna First United Methodist Church. Funeral Services Information
