Three relatives said they were shot early Monday during a robbery attempt in a DeKalb County apartment complex, according to police. But investigators aren’t sure if the trio’s story adds up.

The men, whose names were not released, said they were attempting to leave the Highlands at East Atlanta complex on Flat Shoals Road when they were shot shortly before 1 a.m., police told Channel 2 Action News.

One man ran to a nearby gas station, where he collapsed. The other two men drove to another gas station and asked for help, according to witnesses and police. The back window of the car was shot out and the trunk was riddled with bullet holes, witnesses said.

The injured men were taken by ambulance to Atlanta Medical Center and Grady Memorial Hospital, according to police. They are expected to survive their injuries.
