As its theme song says, it’s a family thing, and fans of “Proud Family” are elated that this “thing” will be back.
On Thursday, Disney Plus announced it has ordered a revival of the animated series about an African American teenager and her extended family. The new series, “The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder,” will feature original cast members including Kyla Pratt as Penny Proud and Tommy Davidson and Paula Jai Parker as her parents, Oscar and Trudy.
Pratt celebrated the news on her Twitter and Instagram on Thursday.
The show was made into a movie in 2015, and it also spun a web series spinoff. The original show premiered 18 years ago and ran three seasons. It was celebrated for its comedic, affirming depiction of a black family.
"In our minds, the show never really went away, as we still had tons of stories left to tell. It's the perfect time to bring back this show, and we can't wait to take fans, old and new alike, on this journey with us," executive producers Bruce W. Smith and Ralph Farquhar said in a joint statement.
Rumors had swirled since November that the show would make a comeback. Jo Marie Payton, who voices the character of Suga Mama, teased the show’s return in an interview on ABC’s “GMA3.”
Production on the series is underway, with a release date yet to be announced. Episodes of the “Proud Family” are not available on Disney Plus.
On Twitter, fans were ecstatic about the revival of the groundbreaking television show.
Agnes Chu, SVP of content for Disney Plus, told Deadline the show's revival will be appreciated by a new generation of fans.
“The show’s humor and relatable stories are as relevant with audiences today as ever,” Chu said. “Our audiences have loved rediscovering their favorite episodes of ‘The Proud Family,’ and we’re excited Bruce, Ralph, Calvin and the returning cast are creating new stories for their new home on Disney+.”
It has not been announced whether Solange would return to sing the theme song.
