The power worker killed by a tree along Ga. 400 was a 27-year-old Cumming man, police said Thursday.

Brian Johnson was hit by a tree Wednesday afternoon while working with a Sawnee EMC crew along Ga. 400, according to Lt. Wesley Burnett with the Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office. The crew was clearing trees for the power lines when Johnson was hit, Burnett said.

Johnson died at the scene, near Whelchel Road in Dahlonega in the southern part of Lumpkin County.

“The entire Sawnee EMC family is deeply saddened by this tragedy,” the utility company said in an emailed statement. “At this time, our thoughts and prayers are with the family of this young man.”

A portion of Ga. 400 was temporarily closed during the investigation. Per standard protocol in a workplace death, OSHA is also investigating.
