Henry County police are trying to determine why one motorist Friday morning drove roughly five miles in the wrong direction before a fatal wrong-way crash on I-75.

The crash happened shortly after 1:30 a.m. in the far left southbound lane of the interstate near mile marker 219, Henry police Lt. Mike Ireland said.

Police said Sherry Williams, 51, of Atlanta, was driving a 2003 Chevrolet Malibu northbound in the southbound lanes when she collided with a southbound 2002 Mitsubishi Mirage driven by 23-year-old Christina Rearley of Palmetto, Fla.

Rearley died at the scene and Williams was flown to Atlanta Medical Center, where she later died.

Ireland said two passengers in the Malibu, a 15-year-old boy and a 4-year-old girl, were taken to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston with injuries that were not life-threatening.

All southbound lanes of I-75 were shut down for several hours, but reopened just before 5:30 a.m.
