A Tennessee corrections officer was shot to death Monday afternoon by police after allegedly trying to run over a woman he was reportedly dating.

According to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, Travis Mullins, employed by the Cocke County Sheriff’s Office, was allegedly targeting a woman whom he’d been dating.

Local police received a call about 5:30 p.m. of a hit-and-run in a Lowe’s parking lot. While investigating, police were informed that Mullins was reportedly heading back to the scene.

Bureau spokesperson Leslie Earhart told media Monday night that Mullins returned to the scene wearing his department uniform and armed.

“At some point, for reasons still under investigation, Mullins was able to get back in his vehicle and grab a second firearm. At some point during the confrontation, Mullins allegedly pointed the gun at the Greeneville officer resulting in the officer firing shots, striking Mullins,” Earhart said.

Mullins, 29, was pronounced dead at the scene. No other officers were injured.

“It is with a heavy heart that one of our own employees and friend Travis Mullins is deceased,” said Cocke County Sheriff Armando Fontes in a statement after the incident. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Travis Mullins and for the Greeneville Police department. This is a sad situation for everyone involved. We ask for your prayers and support for everyone involved as we go through this tragic situation.”
