A 58-year-old woman was recovering Thursday after being shot in the leg by a stray bullet during the first hour of 2015, Atlanta police said.

The incident happened shortly before 1 a.m. Thursday at a home in the 400 block of Fairburn Road in southwest Atlanta.

Atlanta police spokeswoman said it appears the bullet came through the ceiling of the house.

The woman, whose name has not been released, was conscious and alert when she was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital.

Five years ago, celebratory gunfire led to the death of a four-year-old boy in DeKalb County. Marquel Peters was attending a New Year's Eve service at his family's church near Decatur when he was shot in the head by a bullet that came through the roof of the church.
