A veteran Macon-Bibb County firefighter was killed and five others hurt Wednesday night battling a house fire in the southern part of the middle Georgia county.

The Macon Telegraph reported that fire Lt. Randy Parker, 46, died shortly after 9 p.m. at a local hospital, according to Bibb coroner Leon Jones.

Parker and other firefighters were called to a blaze at a home on Fairview Drive shortly before 6 p.m.

A floor collapsed, sending several of the firefighters into the basement, Macon-Bibb County government spokesman Chris Floore told the Telegraph.

Battalion Chief Steven Stafford, 59, was flown to a burn center in Augusta, and two other firefighters, 34-year-old Adam Mitchie and 46-year-old Ferrell Cromer, were taken to the burn center by ambulance.

Two other firefighters – Matt Couey, 27, and Ben Bollinger, 28 – were taken to a Macon hospital and were in stable condition, according to the Telegraph.

The homeowners were able to get out of the burning house uninjured.

Floore said Parker had been with the department for more than 20 years.
