An Oglethorpe County man is facing two felony charges after state and federal agents allegedly discovered that he had produced and distributed pornographic images of children.
Brett Allen Proffitt, 37, of Winterville, was arrested Nov. 6 on charges of sexual exploitation of children/possession of child pornography and child molestation.
According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, an FBI undercover operation discovered that someone had been distributing child porn online from a computer at a West Beaverdam Road address in Winterville. Based on the images transmitted, authorities determined that the same person was producing the child porn. FBI agents forwarded their findings to the GBI’s Athens field office for further investigation.
GBI and FBI agents executed a search warrant at the residence just hours after receiving the information. They found numerous electronic devices, which were taken for further investigation.
Agents took Proffitt into custody without incident. He remains in the Oglethorpe County Jail with no bond.
The Oglethorpe County Sheriff’s Office and the Oglethorpe County Department of Family and Children Services are assisting agents with the investigation.
