Just days after the school year began, Newton County Schools officials said Thursday the district was the target of two threats.

"Late last night, Newton County School System received two threats via Facebook regarding the apparent safety of our schools," according to a post on the district's Facebook page.

Officials do not yet know who sent the threatening messages, but an investigation is underway.

District staff, with the assistance of police officers, “spent the entire evening and well into the early morning hours, checking each and every school facility in our system,” the district said in the Facebook post.

They searched every classroom, closet and restroom for anything suspicious or out of the ordinary. It was determined the threats were not credible.

“District officials wanted to make you aware of this situation prior to the start of the school day as law enforcement may be in the area of your child’s school,” according to the Facebook post.

School Superintendent Samantha Fuhrey asked anyone with information about the Facebook threats to contact the Newton County Sheriff's Office at 678-625-5007.
