Here's a roundup of news trending across the nation and world today.
What to know now:
1. Two officers killed: Two Des Moines-area police officers were shot and killed early Wednesday, about 20 minutes apart in what authorities are calling ambush-style attacks. Reports say the officers, one from the Urbandale Police Department, the other from the Des Moines Police Department were shot at 1:05 a.m. CT and 1:25 a.m. CT, respectively, while they were sitting in their cars. No further details were available as investigators continued to work the crime scenes.
2. Flight MH370: Missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 likely had no one at the controls after it went off course and eventually spiraled into the Indian Ocean, a new theory speculates. A new report from the Australian Transport Safety Bureau suggests the plane dove into the water at a high rate of speed, and was not glided to an attempted water landing by the pilot. The report pointed to the flaps on the plane's wings, saying they were not in a position that would indicate anything other than the plane fell from the sky when it ran out of gas. The plane disappeared on a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing in March 2014.
3. Game 7 tonight: The Chicago Cubs beat the Cleveland Indians Tuesday night to force Game 7 of the World Series. The Cubs took a seven-run lead into the fourth inning and didn't look back. The Indians would score three runs and the Cubs would add two more to end the game 9-3. Game 7 is Wednesday in Cleveland, and will start at 8 p.m. ET.
4. Another Clinton/FBI release: The FBI on Monday released the findings of a 2001 investigation into the pardon by President Bill Clinton of the husband of a wealthy Democratic donor. The release of the information, the agency explained on Tuesday, was triggered automatically in response to a Freedom of Information Act request. The FBI said that information was asked for at least three times under a FOIA request, and that such a series of requests would trigger an automatic release of all the information that could be given to the public. The 129-page report was heavily redacted. "Per the standard procedure for FOIA, these materials became available for release and were posted automatically and electronically to the FBI's public reading room in accordance with the law and established procedures," an FBI statement said.
5. Who is No. 1: The first ranking for the College Football Playoff were released Tuesday. Alabama is in first place, followed by Clemson, Michigan and, in a surprise to some, Texas A&M. The Aggies, with one loss, came in ahead of unbeaten Washington. Ohio State was in sixth place.
