What to know now:
1. Gun control: The White House on Monday unveiled a list of executive actions designed to reduce gun violence across the United States. The package of administration actions President Obama intends to announce on Tuesday includes 10 provisions under four categories – Keep guns out of the wrong hands through background checks; Make our communities safer from gun violence; Increase mental health treatment and reporting to the background check system; Shape the future of gun safety technology. President Obama will speak to the country Tuesday about the initiatives.
2. Still in Oregon: Armed protesters remain in a federal building in a wildlife preserve in Oregon, claiming they will stay there until they get what they want – something they have not yet clearly defined. Ammon Bundy, the protest leader, told CNN, "We will be here as long as it takes. … We have no intentions of using force upon anyone, (but) if force is used against us, we would defend ourselves."
3. "Making a Murderer": More than 200,000 people have signed an online petition calling for President Obama to pardon a convicted murderer whose story was told in a Netflix series called "Making a Murderer." The petition seeks to free Steven Avery who was convicted of murdering Teresa Halbach in Wisconsin in 2007. He is currently serving a life sentence.
4. Iran vs. Saudi Arabia: Iran's president slammed Saudi Arabia Tuesday, saying the country cannot "cover up" the crime of executing a leading Shiite cleric. A growing number of Saudi allies have cut ties with Iran after protesters responded to Sheikh Nimr al Nimr's execution by attacking the Saudi Embassy in Tehran and its consulate in Mashhad.
5. Out on bail: Michael Slager, the former police officer seen on a video shooting Walter Scott in the back in North Charleston, S.C., is out of jail after posting a $500,000 bond. His trial, set for October 31.
