Prosecutors announced today that murder charges against a young woman who took an abortion pill that resulted in the death of her fetus have been dropped.
Kenlissia Jones, 23, of Albany, Ga., reportedly took a drug called Cytotec that she bought online from Canada, then delivered the male fetus in a car as a neighbor drove her to a hospital. The newborn died a short time later.
Jones was 5 1/2 months along in her pregnancy. She was ordered held without bond on charges of murder and possession of a dangerous drug.
The charges against Jones stunned abortion rights opponents and advocates alike. Experts say Georgia law explicitly prohibits women from being prosecuted for feticide involving their own pregnancy.
