Three people were killed Wednesday when two planes crashed in Georgia, WSB-TV reported.

The crash happened near West Georgia Regional Airport, according to Carroll County Fire public information officer Bud Benefield.

Bennefield told WSB-TV that it appears that the two planes collided in midair.

Carroll County Sheriff Capt. Jeff Richards told the news channel that one of the planes was a training plane and might have been locally based.

Richards said the crash should not affect local traffic in the area.

The FAA has been notified of the crash. It released a statement to WSB-TV: "Two single aircraft, a Diamond Aircraft DA20C1 and a Beech F33A, collided in midair over at the West Georgia Airport, Carrolton, Georgia, at 10:54 a.m. today. The FAA will investigate and the NTSB will determine the cause of the accident. Please contact local authorities for passenger information."
