What started out as a cold weather prank has grown into a tradition for Tom Grotting.

Grotting, who lives in northeast Minneapolis, posted a photo of two frozen pairs of pants on a Facebook group called "I Love NE Minneapolis" Friday and the quirky display of clothing took off.

"I think a few years he's been doing it now. And this year he posted on Facebook and sort of dared people to do it too," Grotting's neighbor, Jolana Bernhardt, told KARE11.

Bernhardt also tried the prank. She and her family used their washing machine to get two pairs of pants sufficiently wet and after some effort, they were able to display them among their porch furniture.

"I just ran them through the washing machine, brought them out after the spin cycle. It took a couple minutes to get them to freeze," she said. "Then they were pretty easy to stand up once they started to freeze."

Grotting said that he got the idea from his brother and has done it for years as "lowbrow entertainment."
