Fourth of July celebrations at Fort Gordon have been canceled this year.

A fireworks show and celebration were initially planned for July 2.

Officials said health and safety concerns were the cause for the cancellation, WJBF reported. It was determined that Centers for Disease Control and Prevention COVID-19 guidelines could not be successfully implemented.

“This was a difficult decision as we know many look forward to sharing this event with family and friends,” officials said in a statement. “We appreciate your support and await coming together and enjoying the scheduled entertainment at the Fall Festival on Friday, October 2nd.”

In 2022, Georgia Power projected its winter peak electricity demand would grow by about 400 megawatts by 2031. Since then, Georgia has experienced a boom of data centers, which require a large load of electricty to run, and Georgia Power's recent forecast shows peak demand growing by 20 times the 400-megawatt estimate from just three years ago.
