The Animal Rescue League will remain open throughout the night Saturday accepting animals left out in the dangerously cold temperatures and sub-zero wind chills.
An emaciated pit bull puppy has been taken in by the shelter after it was found frozen Friday night in East Liberty, Executive Director Dan Rossi said. The animal is 3 months old and weighs only 14 pounds, as opposed to the 30-35 pounds it should weigh.
A Facebook post from the Animal Rescue League asks anyone who sees an animal left out in the cold to notify law enforcement that animals can be brought to the shelter at 6620 Hamilton Avenue.
The post also included a reminder that Pittsburgh City Code prohibits residents from leaving their pets outside for longer than 30 minutes when the temperature falls below 32 degrees.
Joe Tedesco, an adoptions manager for the ARL, said the agency has already taken in about 10 dogs this season because of the cold.
“Most people’s dogs want to come back inside just like you do,” he said about the cold.
The ARL will nurse this puppy back to health and will eventually put it up for adoption.
