Man charged in deadly crash
An 18-year-old man is scheduled to make an initial court appearance today on suspicion of driving under the influence after authorities say he rear-ended a van in southern Nevada, causing a crash that killed five Southern California family members and injured two others. Jean Soriano of California was being held without bail Sunday in the Clark County Detention Center in Las Vegas pending the hearing. He also was booked Saturday on charges of failure to decrease speed or use due care, and driving without a driver’s license.

12 die in bus-truck collision
A bus traveling on a mountain road collided with a truck in thick fog and plunged over a cliff, killing 12 people and injuring 14. The Veracruz state public safety department said the bus was traveling between the cities of Misantla and Xalapa when it hit the truck coming from the opposite direction Saturday night. The bus flipped several times and fell into a canyon about 300 feet deep.

Attackers kill preacher, 6 others
Seven people were killed in attacks in the capital and in the western city of Fallujah on Sunday, including a mosque preacher who was gunned down outside a sweets shop. A police officer said assailants shot and killed the preacher, Sheik Talib Zuwayid of the al-Baraa mosque in Fallujah, along with his nephew and another man. In Baghdad, two separate explosions killed four people and wounded 14.

Crash, attack at Wal-Mart hurt 4
Four people were hurt Sunday when a driver crashed his vehicle into a Wal-Mart in California and assaulted people in the store. After the crash, the driver got out his vehicle and used a blunt object to attack people, said San Jose police Officer Albert Morales, a department spokesman. Investigators have not determined how fast the driver — described as a man in his 30s — was going at the time of the crash, but the car went about 10 to 20 feet into the store. It was unclear what prompted the attack.

Freezing weather wipes out flea circus
An entire troupe of performing fleas has fallen victim to the freezing temperatures gripping Germany. Flea circus director Robert Birk said he was shocked to find all of his 300 fleas dead inside their transport box Wednesday morning. The circus scrambled to find and train a new batch so it could fulfill its engagements at an open-air fair in the western town of Mechernich-Kommern. Michael Faber, who organizes the fair, said an insect expert at a nearby university was able to provide 50 fleas in time for the first show Sunday.

Tourism promotion sparks controversy
More than 50 Iranian tourists visited sites in southern Egypt on Sunday amid tight security as part of a bilateral tourism promotion deal that has generated some controversy. The tourists, who according to a security official arrived on some of the first commercial flights between the two countries in three decades, will be restricted in their movement following objections to receiving visitors from Shiite Iran from some ultraconservative Sunni Muslims. Members of the Salafi movement in Egypt consider Shiites heretics and fear Iran is trying to spread its faith in the Sunni world.

Shooting reported outside church
Police in northeast Ohio were investigating a shooting outside a church that left one man dead after an Easter service. Ashtabula police would not confirm the fatality, reported by news media outlets and a church member. A police officer would say only that authorities were investigating. Joan Crockett, a member of the Hiawatha Church-God in Christ, said the man was shot outside after Easter services about 1:15 p.m. Crockett said the man knew the shooter, and that a suspect was taken into custody.
