Mark Clayton Davis has been charged that he wanted to hire someone to kill his estranged wife.

A coastal Georgia man has been arrested on charges that he wanted to hire someone to kill his estranged wife.

Port Wentworth Police Lt. Dale Sylvester told WSAV-TV that police got a tip last week that 60-year-old Mark Clayton Davis was seeking to have a family member assassinated.

Detectives believe it stemmed from Davis’ pending divorce from his wife Sherry.

Using an undercover officer, investigators obtained video and audio recordings of Davis, including offers to pay thousands of dollars.

“The statements were just so clear, precise and eerie, we said OK, this is for real,” said Sylvester. “Everyone seems to be shocked that he would go this far with it.”

Davis is charged with conspiracy and criminal attempt to commit murder charges. No bail was granted at a hearing Friday. Davis is due back in court this week. Davis could face one to 10 years in prison if convicted. It’s unclear if Davis has a lawyer.
