Imprisoned singer R. Kelly has reportedly been attacked by a fellow inmate, his lawyer confirmed.

Steve Greenberg, Kelly’s attorney, confirmed to ABC7 in Chicago that Kelly was attacked this week.

Greenberg said an individual entered Kelly’s cell and attacked him. He said Kelly was left with cuts and bruises.

TMZ, which was first to report the news, said that according to unnamed federal law enforcement sources, Kelly was sitting on his bed at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Chicago when he was attacked. An inmate reportedly walked into his cell and punched him.

According to TMZ, the fight did not last long. The inmate punched Kelly because he was angry about the facility being on lockdown multiple times because of people protesting Kelly on the outside.

The jailed singer was looked at by a doctor and had no serious injuries, TMZ reported.

Kelly, 53, remains in jail since being indicted on federal child pornography, obstruction of justice and racketeering charges last year.

A Federal Bureau of Prisons spokesperson told TMZ it “cannot comment on an individual inmate’s conditions of confinement or medical status due to privacy and safety reasons,” the outlet reported.
