A motorist was killed early Friday in a single vehicle crash on I-85 south of downtown Atlanta, police said.

The motorist was driving a 2006 Ford Focus “at a high rate of speed” on the ramp from Ga. 166 to I-85 south shortly before 3:30 a.m. when “he lost control of the vehicle and began to slide sideways,” Atlanta police spokeswoman Kim Jones said.

“The vehicle slid through the grassy area in the curve of I-85 south and struck a tree on the driver’s side,” Jones told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution in an email.

The driver, whose name has not been released, died at the scene.

Two lanes of I-85 southbound were closed for about three hours, but were reopened at 6:20 a.m.
