A 62-year-old Florida man who set out on his boat and vanished late last week was rescued Sunday 86 miles off the coast of Cape Canaveral, clinging to the capsized vessel, according to reports.
A search for Stuart Bee, who was reported missing Friday, lasted two days before a 225-foot container ship named the Angeles found him in the Atlantic, CBS News reported, citing the U.S. Coast Guard.
Bee was in a precarious position, according to photos of the incident, which showed the 32-foot Sea Ray vessel about to go fully underwater just as the crew pulled him to safety.
The Coast Guard later arrived to the rescue and transported Bee back to shore.
Officials on the scene did not comment on Bee’s physical condition or say whether he needed medical attention. Neither did they reveal the circumstances surrounding the boat’s sinking.
Photos of the rescue shared to Twitter show Bee’s boat nearly fully submerged with just the vessel’s nose jutting from the surface of the water. The rescue crew lowered a floating life ring attached to a rope, and Bee climbed up a rope ladder onto the deck.
He was dripping wet but alive.
“Saving lives at sea is our highest calling. This is a truly incredible outcome that demonstrates the bond among all mariners and our community,” said Capt. Mark Vlaun, commanding officer of Sector Jacksonville. “Thank you to our mission partners that launch into action and to all who got the word out to find and rescue Mr. Bee.”
