Investigators have not determined why a man was on DeKalb County train tracks Tuesday afternoon. But the Norfolk Southern train was unable to stop in time and struck and killed the man.

The man, whose name was not released, did not move after the train’s horn was sounded, a Norfolk spokesperson said. The train’s emergency brakes were not fast enough to prevent the 16-car train from hitting the man around 4 p.m. off Lenox Park Boulevard.

The train was traveling from Chamblee to East Point at the time the man was killed, according to Norfolk. The train was released from the scene around 6:30 p.m.

The incident remains under investigation by police and the train company.

Earlier reports that a second person was also struck and injured could not be confirmed late Tuesday.
