The motorist killed early Friday in a single vehicle crash on I-85 south of downtown has been identified as Philippe St. Charles, 21, according to the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s office.

The victim’s family has been notified and no more information is available, said investigator Mary Beth Hauptle.

St. Charles was driving a 2006 Ford Focus “at a high rate of speed” on the ramp from Ga. 166 to I-85 south shortly before 3:30 a.m. when “he lost control of the vehicle and began to slide sideways,” Atlanta police spokeswoman Kim Jones said.

“The vehicle slid through the grassy area in the curve of I-85 south and struck a tree on the driver’s side,” Jones told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution in an email.

The driver died at the scene.

Two lanes of I-85 southbound were closed for about three hours, but were reopened at 6:20 a.m.
