A man was critically injured in a fire that destroyed his Lawrenceville home Thursday night.
Firefighters were called around 6:45 p.m. to the 1200 block of Stoneshyre Court, near Ga. 20, after a neighbor spotted the flames, Capt. Tommy Rutledge with the Gwinnett County Fire department said. The large, two-story home was fully engulfed when crews arrived, he said.
A resident injured in the fire was outside of the house and able to tell firefighters no one else was inside, Rutledge said. The man, whose name was not released, was transported to Gwinnett Medical Center in critical condition.
A small dog was found on the collapsed deck of the home and had a slight burn injury. The dog was taken by a local animal hospital for treatment.
While firefighters battled the blaze, embers ignited small fires in neighboring yards, Rutledge said. Crews were able to keep the fire from spreading to other homes, he said.
Investigators remained on the scene late Thursday and had not been able to conduct a complete search of the home, Rutledge said. The fire caused the first and second floors to collapse into the basement, he said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Firefighters were speaking to witnesses late Thursday and expected to continue battling hot spots for several hours.
