A 40-year-old man was seriously injured Sunday when he fell off Raven Cliff Falls in North Georgia.

The man, whose name has not been released, was hiking near the top of the falls when he fell about 50 feet, according to White County Fire Services spokeswoman Ana Newberry.

Terrain and debris made it difficult for emergency personnel to reach the man, she said, and they arrived about 90 minutes after the initial call to White County 911. They were able to place him into a “stokes” basket with proper spinal stabilization, and a Department of Natural Resources helicopter lifted him via a long line haul to an awaiting Air Life 2 helicopter.

The man was airlifted to Atlanta Medical Center with life-threatening injuries, Newberry said. In all, 29 emergency personnel were involved in the recovery effort.

The falls are about 90 miles northeast of Atlanta, in an area of White County that is part of the Chattahoochee Wildlife Management Area.
