The driver accused in a hit-and-run of an 8-year-old boy turned himself into authorities late Saturday night, according to a Channel 2 Action News report.

Lazaro Rodriguez, 59, is being held in the Cobb County jail on a charge of felony hit-and-run.

The victim 8-year-old Eesah Johnson remained in a coma on Sunday after doctors delayed a surgery, according to Channel 2.

On Monday, Johnson, a second-grader at Labelle Elementary, was trying to cross Olive Springs Road to get to a friend’s house when a car came from out of nowhere and struck him, according statements provided to the news station.

Witnesses said the impact of the collision launched the child about 30 feet down the road, Channel 2 reported.

Rodriguez surrendered days after police announced they were searching for a dark blue or black BMW X3 SUV with damage to the driver’s-side headlight area and distributed pictures of the vehicle to the news media.

Channel 2 also reported that Johnson’s family has set up a GoFundMe page to help pay his medical costs.
