For many folks, hot and humid climates (like summer months in Atlanta) don't make for the most ideal vacation spots. But according to one travel site, hotter climes mean fewer crowds, better hotel prices and lots of cool festivals on the calendar.

DK Eyewitness Travel experts compiled a list of America's 15 best cities to vacation during those sweltering summer months, ranking Atlanta sixth overall.
Atlanta (or "the capital of the New South") was recognized for its variety of attractions and activities, including the multitude of water recreation available on the Chattahoochee River.

Here’s what DK Eyewitness had to say about staying cool in Hotlanta:
"The capital of the New South boasts plenty of attractions built to resist the summer heat. Recharge at the air-conditioned World of Coca-Cola with plenty of liquid refreshment, or inside the massive Georgia Aquarium – kids will also enjoy splashing around in the dancing fountains across the street at Centennial Park.
There's also SkyView Atlanta, a 20-story Ferris wheel with climate-controlled gondolas. Otherwise you can kayak, tube, and paddleboard the Chattahoochee River with Shoot the Hooch, or gorge on Queen of Cream's sweet treats and the King of Pops' celebrated ices."
Another Georgia city, Savannah, ranked 11th on the list for its beautiful, shady oaks and the ever-popular River Street.

Why DK Eyewitness chose Savannah:
Summer in Savannah is the best time to beat the crowds – the shady live oaks and lush, subtropical squares help keep things bearable, with afternoons best spent sipping mint juleps off antebellum verandas or sampling the sweet delights at Leopold's Ice Cream.
River Street is a shopper's and seafood lover's paradise – you can take a relaxing cruise on the Savannah River from here, or enjoy the fireworks displays, held on the first Friday and Saturday of each month. Just outside the city, the Oatland Island Wildlife Center offers close animal encounters inside its air-conditioned main building.
