East Point officials are still investigating the cause of an overnight apartment fire that claimed the life of a local man.

While battling the blaze at Bullock Habersham Apartments on Habersham Drive, firefighters discovered the body of John Tatum, 29, in his apartment. An autopsy is under way, but officials are treating the cause of death as accidental.

Fire crews arrived at the eight-unit apartment building shortly after midnight Saturday to find the other residents already outside and the building in flames. The fire was so intense firefighters were unable to conduct a search of the building until after the flames were brought under control, according to a news release.

Twelve adults and three children were displaced by the fire.
