9-year-old injured when room catches fire while charging iPod
A girl is out of the hospital after she got burned Wednesday afternoon when she charged her iPod.
Channel 2’s Wendy Corona went to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite where she learned new information about the girl.
The 9-year-old went to the hospital for observation and was released around 3 p.m. Wednesday. The girl told her dad she was scared and thought she was going to die when her bedroom caught fireWednesday afternoon.
“It started when someone either put something into an outlet or plugged something into an outlet,” said Mark Duke, deputy chief of operations at the Sandy Springs Fire Department.
The child’s father told Corona off camera his daughter tried plugging a charger for her iPod into the wall when sparks burned two fingers on one of her hands. She was taken to Scottish Rite for observation.
Twenty-nine firefighters and six trucks responded to the call on Dunraven Place, off Dalrymple Road in Sandy Springs. Firefighters believe because of the quick response and attack, the girl and the home were saved.
“The fire was contained to that room with moderate smoke damage throughout the rest of the house, through the second floor,” said Duke.
Fire investigators are still working to determine the actual cause of the fire. While the home is not livable, they are pleased the soon-to-be fourth-grader survived the shock and burn.
“She was conscious and alert and was very cognitive of what was going on,” Duke said.
The girl's father said they just moved into the house last Sunday.
