A motorist was killed in a wreck early Saturday after driving the wrong way on I-85 for at least seven miles, Gwinnett County, police said.
Gwinnett police Sgt. Rich Long told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that around 2 a.m. Saturday, 911 operators began receiving multiple reports of a Honda “moving northbound on I-85 in the southbound lanes at a high rate of speed.”
Long said that as several police units were responding to try and stop the vehicle, the Honda got onto Ga. 316, going east in the westbound lanes.
There were “a lot of Gwinnett units trying to get into position to intercept the guy,” Long said, but before they could, the Honda struck two guard rails on Ga. 316 near Sugarloaf Parkway, splitting the vehicle in half and killing the driver.
The identity of the male driver has not been released.
The investigation is continuing.
