An elderly motorist driving the wrong way on I-985 was killed early Tuesday in a four-vehicle crash in northern Hall County, authorities said.

The wreck happened shortly after 6:30 a.m. on I-985 northbound at Exit 24.

Georgia State Patrol spokesman Gordy Wright told the AJC that Raymond Sanford Reed, 80, of Gainesville entered I-985 at Exit 24, going south on the northbound exit ramp and into the northbound travel lanes.

“Approximately 146 feet from the ramp, his Buick LeSabre collided head-on with a Ford F-150 pickup truck being driven by Cresencio Martinez-Trejo, 54, from Gainesville,” Wright said.

The pickup truck was then hit from behind by a Honda Civic, while Reed’s Buick was brushed with a glancing blow by a tractor-trailer, Wright said.

He said the drivers of the pickup and Honda, as well as two children in the Honda, were treated at Northeast Georgia Medical Center and released.

The northbound lanes of I-985 were shut down for several hours, and reopened just before 11 a.m.
