The Woodstock City Council has approved, with conditions, requests for rezoning and a variance to allow a church on Springfield Drive, across from Springfield Park.

Dwelling Place Church would move to a 5.36-acre site from 110 Londonderry Court, Woodstock, staff said in a report to the council. The church plans to develop its land in three phases with 24,500 square feet of buildings and 220 parking spaces.

A sanctuary, classrooms, lobby and foyer would be constructed in the first phase, according to a presentation to the council. Church leaders have agreed to hire off-duty police officers if needed to direct traffic on Sundays.

Part of the land was zoned downtown low-density residential, and part, downtown general commercial; Dwelling Place requested rezoning to all downtown general commercial. The church also sought a variance to permit 220 parking spaces versus up to 74 spaces that otherwise would be allowed.

The church has suggested a possible shared parking arrangement with the city for visitors to Springfield Park, staff said.
