If you live in Woodstock and notice discolored tap water in the coming weeks, it’s probably because the Fire Department is performing annual fire hydrant maintenance.

Hydrant testing was to begin Monday in the Deer Run area and continue through June 1, officials said. The temporary discoloration is stirred-up sediment in the water lines and is harmless, though it may stain light-colored clothing.

“As part of testing procedures, the Fire Department will flow each hydrant until the water is clear; however, smaller water lines that lead to each house may still have cloudy water,” according to a city announcement. To remedy it, let the faucet run until the water is clear, or run a small, empty load in the washing machine.

The Fire Department will paint, flow and grease hydrants. The testing is necessary to maintain the city’s ISO fire insurance rating of 1, the best possible rating, officials said. Information: Fire Marshal Jimmy Eley, 770-926-2896.
