A woman was struck by a train and killed in Gwinnett County early Thursday, police said.

Gwinnett police Cpl. Edwin Ritter said officers responded to a call at 5:45 a.m. regarding two people struck by a train in the area of Jones Mill Road and Button Gwinnett Drive near Norcross.

A homeless couple tried to cross the tracks in front of the northbound train, according to Gwinnett police Sgt. Brian Reddy.

Reddy told the AJC that the man made it across, but the woman did not, and was struck by the train and killed. Her name has not been released.

Reddy said the man and woman apparently had a campsite in nearby woods and were walking to a fast food restaurant at Buford Highway and Jimmy Carter Boulevard when the woman was hit by the Norfolk Southern train hauling "piggyback" trailers.
