Woman jumps to escape Sandy Springs apartment fire

A woman was badly hurt overnight when she jumped from a third-floor unit of a burning Sandy Springs apartment building.

The blaze broke out Tuesday night at the Avalon on Abernathy complex in the 500 block of Abernathy Road.

“I heard someone say ‘fire,’ so I ran downstairs and saw that it was completely engulfed in flames,” resident Donovan King told Channel 2 Action News. “You could feel the floor getting hot, the walls, it was starting to fill with smoke.”

King told Channel 2 he saw the woman before she jumped.

“The fire was coming out from the window she was leaning out of,” he said.

Channel 2 reported the woman was taken to a local hospital in critical condition.

Her name has not been released.

Officials told Channel 2 that the fire was caused by cooking.

“The apartment dweller had left something on the stove. (He) turned his head for a few minutes and the next thing he knew, he had a large fire going,” Sandy Springs Fire Chief Mark Duke said.

Twenty people were displaced by the fire.
