A woman in her 80s was in critical condition late Monday after being removed from a burning personal care home in Gwinnett County, according to a fire department captain.
Crews were called to a home in the 800 block of Rock Springs Road, off Buford Drive, in Lawrenceville around 8:30 p.m. and arrived to find heavy smoke and an active fire, Capt. Tommy Rutledge said. After being told one person was still inside the home, firefighters made immediate entry, Rutledge said.
Inside a bedroom near where the fire originated, firefighters found an unconscious woman and removed her through a window of the home, Rutledge said. The woman, whose name was not released, sustained severe smoke inhalation and a burn injury and was taken to Gwinnett Medical Center in critical condition.
A second man who was able to escape from the home was conscious and breathing, but taken to the hospital for evaluation for smoke inhalation, Rutledge said. Six others in the home escaped without injury.
The fire caused heavy damage to the home, which is a private residence. A licensed personal care home called Senior Care America 2 is run at the home, according to the Georgia Department of Human Services website.
The cause of the blaze remains under investigation, Rutledge said late Monday.
