A woman who tried to jump in front of an eastbound MARTA train Thursday in Atlanta has possible brain damage, a severe head injury, two broken legs and a broken right arm.

The woman was listed in critical but stable condition at Grady Memorial Hospital, MARTA spokesman Lyle Harris said Friday morning. Her name has not been released.

About 5 p.m. Thursday, the woman tried to jump into the path of an eastbound train at the East Lake station. She did not make it. Instead, she crashed through the cabin door where the operator sits.

“It was either through an act of great timing or luck that she crashed through the doors,” Harris said.

Harris said he did not know how fast the train was moving at the time of the crash.

The incident halted service at the East Lake station for more than two hours. MARTA provided buses between Edgewood/Candler Park, Decatur and East Lake stations to continue service after announcing delays on the blue and green lines.

Service was not restored until 7:30 p.m.
