A woman and two children reportedly kidnapped Friday night from southeast Atlanta have been found safe after being dropped off at Atlanta shopping mall west of downtown, police said.

The victims were found around 8:30 a.m. Saturday at the Mall West End.

“Initial word from the scene is they are not injured,” Atlanta police spokesman Carlos Campos told Channel 2 Action News.

Police have released details about what happened between the time the three were reported abducted from the area of Reed and Bass streets and the time they were found.

The incident began around 7 p.m. Friday when a man was shot during an attempted carjacking at that location, police spokeman John Chafee said.

“The preliminary investigation indicates that the male victim was at the location in a black SUV when someone attempted to carjack him and shot him,” Chafee said.

“He was able to flee the scene in the SUV and returned later,” Chafee said, adding that the man was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in stable condition with a gunshot wound to the chest.

“It appears that shortly after the attempted carjacking, the female victim drove up to the scene with her two children in the vehicle,” Chafee said. “The suspect or suspects then got into the vehicle with her and the children and made her drive from the location.”

Police overnight issued a missing child alert, posting a description of the woman’s 1997 Oldsmobile on interstate message boards.
