Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed, anticipating resumption of travel on I-85 in Buckhead, lifted a ban Friday on construction in the area.

“I want to thank our GDOT partners for working around the clock to repair and open Interstate 85 way ahead of schedule,” Reed said in a release Friday. “I also want to thank our residents, visitors and public employees for their patience during a time when normal travel routes throughout the city had to be adjusted.”

Fire consumed a portion of I-85 in late March and closed the road for more than a month as crews worked non-stop to repair and re-open the critical passage. A Channel 2 Action News report Friday said the road could open as early as tonight.

The mayor’s office said the city will also remove “no thru traffic” signs in areas around the bridge and that the Office of Buildings will resume accepting new construction permits.
