A winter weather advisory has been posted for across extreme north Georgia, where Thursday’s rain is expected to change over to light snow late in the day.

The rain should end across metro Atlanta before temperatures plunge into the low 20s Thursday night, forecasters said.

The winter weather advisory is in effect from 5 p.m. Thursday through 7 a.m. Friday for Murray, Fannin, Gilmer, Union, Towns, Pickens, Dawson, Lumpkin and White counties.

The National Weather Service said snow accumulations are possible at elevations above 1,500 feet, while icy roads will be possible at any elevation in those counties.

A wind chill advisory is also in effect for those counties from 1 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday, when wind chills could drop as low as -5 at higher elevations, the Weather Service warned.

Channel 2 meteorologist Karen Minton said the chance of rain in metro Atlanta is 90 percent Thursday. The rain should end by mid-afternoon, when northwesterly winds will pick up.

A wind advisory for gusts to 35 mph is in effect for all of north and central Georgia from 5 p.m. Thursday through 4 a.m. Friday.

Highs Thursday in the 40s will be followed by overnight lows in the low 20s, Minton said.

She said Friday will be sunny but windy and cold, with highs only in the mid-30s before temperatures fall back into the low 20s Friday night.

Saturday will be sunny, with highs in the mid-40s.

There’s a 60 percent chance of rain Sunday, when highs will be in the low 50s. Sunday’s rain could mix with snow as far south as Atlanta Sunday night, when lows will be in the low 30s.
