The snow and ice may be gone, but Georgia DOT crews are still dealing with the aftereffects of the winter storms. This week workers started installing thousands of raised pavement markers on northeast Georgia state highways that were scraped off by snowplows.

The first such project kicked off Tuesday along U.S. 129 and Ga. 11 in Gainesville. DOT officials said replacing all of the markers will take several months. They’re designed to help motorists see lane markings during low light.

Crews also continue to remove damaged trees, tree limbs and other debris from state rights-of-way in the hardest-hit counties of Forsyth, Gwinnett, Dawson and Lumpkin.
