A southwest Atlanta intersection was shut down and a nearby elementary school put on temporary lockdown Wednesday afternoon while police investigated a wild shooting involving an officer.

An officer was investigating a reported robbery when he ran into a shootout at an apartment complex in the 2700 block of Old Hapeville Road, according to the Atlanta Police Department.

When the officer fired his weapon, the suspects involved in the shootout fled in a car across Old Hapeville Road, where they ran off an embankment and crashed into a commercial building, police said.

Two of the passengers were sent to the hospital to be treated for gunshot wounds. Police are still investigating who shot the passengers.

No officer involved in the shootout was injured.

Another passenger was transported to the hospital for injuries sustained in the accident.

The driver of the car fled on foot and has not been arrested, police said.

Police are still investigating the shooting and charges are pending against several of the suspects, police said.

Because of the incident, both Cleveland Avenue and Old Hapeville Road were blocked just before 1 p.m.

Atlanta Public Schools spokeswoman Kimberly Willis Green said Cleveland Avenue Elementary School, which is across the street from the shooting scene, was on lockdown at 1 p.m.

The school was taken off lockdown at 1:30 p.m. and resumed normal operations at 3 p.m., Green said.
