The Braves are bad. Hundred-year flood bad. They’re so terrible that I can’t help turning the dial to listen to each day’s hijinks and new splashes of ineptitude.

Sure, the team lately has had a hard time hitting, fielding and pitching. But the strategy of Liberty Media, the team’s absentee owners, has been a business grand slam. Liberty picked up a team virtually for free, spent comparatively little on fielding that team and then hit the taxpayers for millions to help double the value of its asset.

And all the while, the Liberty asset — the Braves — must try to keep the public interested, assuring fans that the future will be bright. And, indeed, it will shine. Maybe not shine for the Braves in the near future. But certainly for Liberty Media.
