Are all cities in Cobb County created equal? According to government data, some cities are growing more quickly than others, and the quality of life may play a factor.
According to new population estimates released Thursday by the United States Census Bureau, the city of Kennesaw gained 3,801 residents between 2010 and 2015. The growth represents a nearly double digit percent change in population — the largest increase seen out of all other Cobb County cities.
Kennesaw also ranked no. 46 in a statewide analysis.
Which Cobb County cities are growing the fastest?
1. Kennesaw: 9.8 percent (3801 residents)
2. Smyrna: 9.5 percent (4875 residents)
3. Acworth: 8.2 percent (1706 residents)
4. Austell 7.2 percent (526 residents)
5. Powder Springs: 6.4 percent (886 residents)
6. Marietta: 4.3 percent (2488 residents)
Marietta had the smallest 5-year growth percentage and was the only Cobb County city to lose residents last year. However, Marietta is still the most populous city in the county with nearly 60,000 residents.
There are a few reasons Kennesaw is an attractive place to live. A new barbecue restaurant and lounge called The Nest opened in mid-February. Kennesaw also has its very own beer festival in April. Kennesaw State Univeristy is one of the largest universities in the metro Atlanta area. It was also ranked the safest city in Cobb County to live in.
In a statement to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the Kennesaw's city office said a variety of housing options, employment opportunities and a pedestrian-friendly downtown area make the city attractive to current and potential residents.
"There is over $400,000 of retail, restaurant, and entertainment projects in the pipeline," said Zack Hoopaugh, communications officer for the city of Kennesaw. "Downtown developments are making the city a more attractive place to live."
